Big Plans

Big Plans

$13.58

The second studio album by contemporary electric blues supergroup the Mannish Boys delivers straightforward Chicago-style blues in an unfussy setting. The list of special guests is as long as the nine-piece band, including guest singers Jody Williams and Bobby Lee Jones, guitarist Rick Holmstrom, pianist Rob Rio, bassists Jeff Big Dad Turmes and Larry “The Mole” Taylor, harmonica player Mitch Kashmar and saxophonist David Woodford. As a result, no one singer or instrumentalist predominates, giving Big Plans a sort of R&B revue feel. The songs are mostly originals by members of the band including bandleader Randy Chortkoff and slide guitarist Frank Goldwasser; while the band get points for largely avoiding the temptation to simply bash out the usual electric blues suspects, none of the album’s original material sounds likely to join the blues canon. A fairly low-key, genial album, Big Plans is considerably less than its title suggests, but it’s likely enough for fans of contemporary electric blues. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Jeff Big Dad Turmes – Bass (Upright), Sax (Alto); Johnny Dyer – Harmonica, Vocals; Larry Taylor – Bass (Upright); Mitch Kashmar – Harmonica; Randy Chortkoff – Harmonica, Vocals; Rick Holmstrom – Guitar (Rhythm), Vocals (Background); Tom Leavey – Bass (Electric); Bobby Jones – Vocals; Bobby Lee Jones – Vocals;

Plans for Travel

Plans for Travel

90° Degrees South’s second full-length release, Plans for Travel, veers toward a more danceable music. The laid-back living room approach that provided the basis for the first album is still there, but somehow relegated to the back row. The very natural-sounding programmed drums made way for a retro drum machine. Analog synthesizers also occupy more space. Tempos have been slightly sped up on a few numbers too. As a result, Kev Fox’ music has moved slightly away from the Labradford/Tortoise connection and closer to Stereolab — “Supermarine S6″ even evokes Kraftwerk’s Autobahn. While The Barrier Silence and the EP A Distant Memory of Home wove a polar exploration theme, Plans for Travel focuses on historic means of transportation — which probably explains the faster pace of this album. All track titles are taken from car, plane, and boat models. It makes good road music, but listeners who enjoyed the previous CDs will probably miss something. The melodic spark that ignited the stripped-down Barrier Silence is buried in the layers of sound. One fails to find the same charming naiveté. Even “Midnight, Blue Star” and “‘A’ Class on Exercise,” the closest examples of 90° South’s earlier sound, can’t top “First Atlantic Flight.” Whether this CD is as good as the first or not depends on taste, but you probably won’t like the two albums for the same reasons. ~ François Couture, Rovi Performers: Kevin Fox – Multi Instruments

It might seem like a contradiction when someone describes Moses Guest as the quintessential all-American Gen-X jam band. Jam bands, after all, were a product of the baby boom generation; Gen-X is supposed to be synonymous with alternative rock, hip-hop, and techno, not Jerry Garcia and the heyday of Haight-Ashbury. But Moses Guest are, in fact, one of the Gen-X bands that has proudly carried on the Grateful Dead/New Riders of the Purple Sage/Kingfish tradition in a post-Garcia world. They have done it with total sincerity rather than irony, and that approach continues to work well for them on Best Laid Plans. With this 2007 release, the Texas-based outfit serves up yet another dose of congenial, good-natured country-fried roots rock and maintains its loyalty to a time when the Grateful Dead, the New Riders, the Allman Brothers, and the Band were writing the book on the jam band aesthetic. Stylistically, this disc worships the ’60s and ’70s rather than the ’90s or 2000s, and the members of Moses Guest wouldn’t have it any other way. One of the things that jam bands do, of course, is jam; Moses Guest are no exception, which is why some of the songs on Best Laid Plans last nine or ten minutes. But while the album’s longer tracks might scare away those who have painfully short attention spans, the bottom line is that, ultimately, Best Laid Plans is about songcraft — and jamming is never seen as a substitute for good, quality songwriting. For Moses Guest, the jams are in service of the songs — not the other way around. Best Laid Plans doesn’t pretend to be cutting edge, but those who have enjoyed Moses Guest’s previous releases will find it to be a worthwhile addition to their catalog. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Graham Guest – Vocals, Guitar (Classical), Guitar (Electric); James Edwards – Drums; Jeremy Horton – Guitar (Bass), Guitar (Electric)

DAEMONICUS captures perfectly the raw feeling which death metal that was created in Sweden 1988-1991, and has had the good taste to back it up with a soundstage that breathe the feel of wicked demos and albums from that period of time rather than a digital and “modern” production. The primary thing however, is that DAEMONICUS succeed with something that too many bands today have forgotten in their hunt for the perfect sound, the tight most blast beats and the most complicated riffs. DAEMONICUS can write songs, real songs. Pieces that you sing along with in the chorus already in the second round the first time you hear them and do not consist of boring nonsense. Death metal when it is allowed to be only death metal! Performers: David Nordström – Cello; Jörgen Persson – Guitar; Magnus Boström – Drums; Stefan Hagström – Vocals; Tommi Konu – Bass

Elf Power’s eighth record, Back to the Web, is certainly a big stylistic change from their last album, Walking with the Beggar Boys. Perhaps it’s due to the time spent on the Orange Twin farm that lead singer and songwriter Andrew Rieger has been inspired to take a more organic, acoustic approach to his music, even ditching that lo-fi fuzzy sound that has defined many of Elf Power’s records (maybe the move to new Warner affiliate Rykodisc precipitated this change) for a cleaner, smoother feel. Gone are the sweet indie pop/rock melodies everyone’s learned to expect and instead come folky, acoustic guitar-driven songs. Rieger’s dreamlike lyrics on Back to the Web are all heavily influenced by nature, and while Rieger’s not always singing about it explicitly (though he can), nature is what he bases nearly all of his metaphors and imagery around. It acts as his solace, his guide; it provides structure; it’s what creates and gives. Not that Rieger’s environment is always a positive thing. “Rolling Black Water,” for example, is a menacing and ominous song, conjuring up images of death and depression, but this is an exception: for the most part the natural world only aids in Rieger’s comprehension of life. Though some Elf Power fans may be satisfied with the few songs that are reminiscent of the band’s previous records (“The World Is Waiting,” “23rd Dream”) and the abstract, occasionally prog-like references to masters and kings, others may be disappointed, or at least confused, by the focus on experimenting with dark, Middle Eastern-inspired drones mixed with Western pop/folk sensibilities. But Elf Power — and Elephant 6, for that matter — have never concerned themselves too much with definitions, and if Back to the Web is just another step in the band’s musical career and development, it certainly bodes well for an interesting future. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi Performers: Heather McIntosh – Cello; Julie DeRoche – Banjo; Julien Derocher – Banjo; Laura Carter – Accordion, Keyboards, Vocals; Andrew Rieger – Guitar (Bass), Vocals, Percussion, Guitar, Bass; Bryan Poole – Guitar (Bass); Davey Wrathgabar – Vocals; Deanna Varagona – Sax (Baritone); Derek Almstead – Guitar (Bass),
